Irriatating Sibling SocietyHow did your siblings shape who you have become?
An average of 3.5 clashes an hour for siblings between 3 and 7 years old and more than one every 10 minutes for siblings in the 2-to-4 age group. But before you yell, Make it stop! researchers say that working through these day to day sibling battles at home carry over to conflict-resolution abilities in the classroom and eventually contribute to our adult social skills.
Similar to negotiating sibling conflict, learning to cope with parental favoritism has implications for getting along in our complex adult social world. Think favoritism doesn’t exist? One longitudinal study found that 65% of mothers and 70% of fathers exhibited a preference for one child in most cases, the older one. Although less favored children may suffer more sadness, self-esteem issues and feelings of unworthiness than their preferred sibling, they also learn life lessons in how to use partnerships with the favorite to their advantage.
How do you see that playing out in your own children's lives?Post your School Reunion Brothers and Sisters: How They Can Help You Recoverwe have learned how helpful brothers and sisters can be and the importance of their relationships with the patient and parents.
